Hands down the best carnitas tacos I’ve ever eaten, and I’ve eaten a lot…
If you’re ever in Oakland, especially if you’re in the Fruitvale area looking for some delicious tacos (of which there are many), don’t be so tempted by the numerous delicious taco trucks (Sinaloa, Mi Grullense, El Ojo de Agua, etc.) that you overlook a little taqueria/pozoleria called Taco Grill.
It might look a little cheesy from the exterior, especially to those who crave Jonathan Gold-esque capital “A”uthenticity, replete as it is with a cartoon cactus as a part of its logo and sustainably sourced local (when possible) organic produce and hormone free Niman Ranch meats, etc. But step inside, order some carnitas tacos served on handmade-to-order corn tortillas, and you will not be disappointed. If you like things spicy, ask for some of the homemade chile de arbol salsa, and if there’s any on hand the ever-gracious owner of the restaurant will be happy to oblige. At $2 per taco, this also happens to be one of the best culinary bargains in what is fast becoming a global gastronomic destination city.
